Quick Links for Jan 5th

Here are some interesting links from today:

  • Move From WordPress.com To WordPress.org
Moving a Blog from WordPress.com to WordPress.org is something I’ve had a lot of questions about – today Jeff Chandler shares tips on how to do it.
  • Lenovo adds multi-touch, facial recognition
Lenovo has announced today that its dapper young netbook will be getting an upgrade, starting with a modest boost in screen size — from 10-inches to 10.2-inches. In addition to this embarrassment of riches, the new IdeaPad S10 netbook will pack LenovoSocial, a suite for “social networking enthusiasts,” VeriFace facial recognition tech and a multi-touch trackpad. The MSRP is $349 and you should be able to get this guy sometime in March. Available in black, white, red, blue, or pink.
  • JVC 5kg 32-inch LCD lightest, greenest at CES?
JVC swears its CES prototype will be the lightest 32-inch LCD out, weighing a mere 5kg its perfect for ceiling mounted installations. At 7mm thick they’ve managed to squeeze 1080p resolution and LED backlighting out of 50% of the materials and less mercury used to produce current designs. A hands on should settle the battle of the thin, expect iPhone comparison pics and contentious weigh ins usually reserved for heavyweight bouts this week in Las Vegas.
  • Netflix Streaming To Be Built Into TVs
More options on the way for watching Netflix (NFLX) streaming movies in your living room: Beginning this spring, Korean electronics giant LG will build Netflix streaming directly into some of its plasma and LCD HDTVs, the companies will announce today. This means that Netflix subscribers will be able to stream more than 12,000 movies and TV shows on their TVs without a separate set-top box or a PC.

Top 10 Firefox 3 Extensions

The more you use Firefox the more you love it. The more quality extensions you find and install the more functional, convenient and helpful Firefox becomes.

I was a latecomer to FireFox… I rebelled for a while and stuck with IE7. Firefox felt kind of rogue to me at first. It wasn’t until FireFox 2 that really made the full switch. The thing that really put the final nail in the IE coffin was finding some really useful extensions that made my online tasks easier.

Here’s a list of my top 10 favorite Firefox extensions… in mostly random order.

Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer
This one is a must have for anyone who uses multiple computers. Install it on all of them and it’ll sync your bookmarks across them all. It also backs them up online so you can access them when you’re on someone else’s computer.

Better GMail 2
If you use GMail or Google Apps email (and you should be) then Better GMail 2 is also a must have. This extension gives your GMail interface more functionality and gives you more control over what buttons or modules you see. It also allows you to tweak the interface to your needs.

Hide Menubar
I don’t need the menu bar so why show it. If you do need all you have to do is press [Alt].

Colorful Tabs
Makes your tabs colorful. To me this just helps me visually separate them.

Delicious Bookmarks

I use delicious to for quick posting to this blog. If you use delicious you should have the bookmarklet.

Google Gears
Google Gears lets you store certain data locally which in turn allows webapps to perform faster. I use Gears for Wordpress and Google Reader mainly. It’s also compatible with Google Docs.

IE Tab
For the few sites left that don’t like IE7.

Picnik: photo editing awesomeness

Picnik
Picnik is awesome for taking an image from the web and quickly letting you fancy it up with shadows, borders or effects. It’s an especially great blogging tool.

TwitterFox
TwitterFox is a lightweight little Twitter client that runs in your FireFox tray. New tweets pop up when they come in (configurable of course) and it also lets you tweet.

PDF Download
Gives you more control over what to do with PDF links: download, launch, print. Prevents PDF’s from crashing your browser session.

Let me know what extensions you use or which of these are your favorites.

DVD’s & Internet Addiction

Here are some interesting links from today:

  • Burn almost any video file to a playable DVD
Putting any old video file – like the DivX/Xvid-encoded videos you’ve downloaded with BitTorrent – onto a DVD to play on your TV can be a daunting task. There’s plenty of software that tackles this sort of thing for a price, but as a lover of open source software, free’s always my first choice.Luckily for all of us, authoring playable DVDs from just about any video file has gotten a lot easier in the open source community. This week I’m going to show you how to burn those downloaded TV shows to a DVD you can play in your living room using the free (as in speech), open source application, DVD Flick.
  • Chinese Doctors Officially Classify Symptoms of Internet Addiction
The Beijing Health Ministry is soon to adopt “internet addiction” as a disorder along with compulsive gambling and alcoholism in the official diagnostic manual. Doctor Tao Ran, who treats sufferers at Beijing’s Military General Hospital, says the threshold is around six hours a day and one of the following symptoms in the past three months: “yearning to get back online, mental or physical distress, irritation and difficulty concentrating or sleeping.” So, um, yeah, I’m addicted, along with ten percent of users under eighteen in China, according to a study cited by a state official.

Awesome Free Screen Capture Utility

If you haven’t heard of the JingProject, head over to the site right now.  I’ve been using Jing for several months (since the initial beta) and I use it all the time.

Jing is a free product by TechSmith, the makers of the premier screen capture product Camtasia Studio and screenshot app SnagIt.

Here at my day job I use it to make little How-To videos or document a process.  It’s so much easier for me to just record the steps with Jing and send a link to the video to an end user, colleague or friend than to write out the steps in an email precisely enough for them to follow.  With Jing’s instant publishing integration it takes no time to upload the video to the web and send the link or save it locally as documentation.

Jing does have a 5 minute limit so therefore is only good for quick, informal screen captures.  If you’re wanting to make a longer or more polished video stick with Camtasia.

Here’s a quick lesson on how Jing works and the ideas that spawned it.  Take a look.
